The Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary have sold two adjacent townhouses in Gramercy after shaving $1 million off the listing price.
The nuns sold 236 and 238 East 15th Street, two adjacent townhouses that have hosted scores of sisters since the buildings were purchased in 1948 and 1952. The homes were initially listed for $19.75 million but were most recently listed for $18.8 million. The actual selling price was not immediately clear since the sale has not yet hit public records.
Compass [TRDataCustom] marketed the townhouses. The new owners, bucking the trend of creating megamansions from single-family brownstones, plan to convert one of the townhouses into a private home and the other into student housing. Together, the homes span 18,720 square feet and have 20 bedrooms and 20 bathrooms.
The sisters have owned the two townhouses for more than 60 years and decided to sell the homes to help fund their charitable efforts. Many of the nuns have relocated to the Bronx. Compass’ Leonard Steinberg, Herve Senequier, Lisa Kobiolke and Dylan Hoffman had the listing.
Townhouse mansion spreads have certainly been in vogue this year. In June, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich’s plans to build a triple-townhouse megamansion. A month prior, Alfa Group co-founder Alexey Kuzmichev paid $57.5 million for a 14,000-square-foot mansion compound on the Upper East Side. [Curbed] — Kathryn Brenzel
