UPDATED: Oct 21. at 5:09 p.m. Hotel developer Sam Chang is expanding his reach in the Garment District — this time with plans for a hotel on the corner of West 36th Street and Eighth Avenue.
Chang’s Great Neck-based McSam Hotel Group [TRDataCustom] filed plans with the city Thursday to replace a one-story retail strip with a 252-key hotel at 523-529 Eighth Avenue, documents show.
The proposed building would rise 24 stories and span more than 73,000 square feet. The building would also house retail space across the entire first floor, as well as part of the cellar floor. Gene Kaufman Architects is designing the project, according to filings.
Chang — one of the city’s most active hotel developers — acquired a 99-year ground lease for the property in June. He paid $27.1 million to Bryant Park-based landlord Joseph P. Day Realty Corp.
Chang already has a strong foothold in the area. In April, the hotelier partnered with Marriott to build five new, ground-up hotel projects across the city.
One of the developments is at 334 West 36th Street, which is slated to open next year.
Last year, Chang filed plans for two adjacent hotels in the area — a 25-story building at 338 West 39th street, and a 21-story structure at 350 West 39th Street.
Gene Kaufman Architects declined to comment. Representatives for Chang could not be immediately reached.
Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified the street corner of the property. It is located on the corner of West 36th Street, not West 39th Street.
