A penthouse once owned by star baseball player Joe DiMaggio at 400 West End Avenue has just hit the market asking $4.5 million.

According to the property’s listing broker, John Venekamp of Brown Harris Stevens, Joltin’ Joe lived in the home for just a few years from 1939-1942, during his record-shattering 56-game winning streak (as well as his brief marriage to Dorothy Arnold). It is likely he rented it, as the building was not converted into a co-op until years later

As Venekamp put it, the penthouse is a “real gem,” with a spectacular 1,300-square-foot wrap terrace overlooking the Hudson River. It has two bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, a private landing off the elevator, built-in bookshelves and hardwood floors.

The penthouse is currently owned by Wesleyan University, which was gifted it in May by one of its alumni under the condition that it would be sold. Leslie Singer of Brown Harris Stevens shares the listing with Venekamp.
