Production company Broadway Stages plans Greenpoint expansion

Broadway Stages, a film production company that operates more than 40 sound stages across Brooklyn and Queens, thinks there’s room for even more. The company filed construction plans with the city’s Department of Buildings on Wednesday to build a new sound stage facility at 277 Monitor Street in Greenpoint.

The new building will measure 180,000 square feet and hold new stages in addition to office space. It will adjoin an existing two-story building at 300 North Henry Street, where scenes for the Netflix original series “Jessica Jones” were shot in 2015. Broadway Stages bought that building and the adjacent empty lot from ExxonMobil in December for $16 million.The production company’s clients include several other Netflix series, such as “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “Master of None” and “Luke Cage.”

Earlier this year, the company’s below-market bid to purchase a former corrections facility in Staten Island was delayed by state comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, who cited an unresolved investigation into Mayor Bill de Blasio’s campaign finances. Gina Argento, the owner and president of Broadway Stages, previously donated a total a $100,000 to de Blasio campaign committees. Broadway Stages first announced its intentions to buy the prison in 2014.

A Representative For Broadway Stages did not immediately return a request for comment.

Last year, the studio at 300 North Henry Street was the victim of robberies by a serial movie-set thief who had pilfered goods from a several studios and co-working spaces across Brooklyn.
