Grey Gardens, the former home of Jackie Onassis’ aunt and cousin and now estate of Washington Post executive editor Ben Bradlee, was sold for an undisclosed amount before opening to the public for Bradlee’s estate sale.
Hundreds turned out — some just for the chance to walk through the house, others on the hunt for a trinket to remember the experience by, according to Bloomberg.
The late Bradlee and his wife Sally Quinn bought the house for $220,000 in 1979 from Edith Bouvier Beale, Jackie O’s cousin, who with her mother, Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale, were infamous for letting their 1.7-acre East Hampton deteriorate around them to the point where it was raided in 1971 by the Suffolk County Health Department.
Items throughout the house were priced from $1 to almost $800, with things from Quinn and Bradlee’s tenure in the house being sold alongside objects from the Beales’ life.
