An assessment by Newsday found that more than 400 homes in Nassau County were undervalued as part of a comprehensive property reassessment in the county. Nassau County executive Laura Curran vowed to revamp the county’s property tax system when she took office in 2018; but the Long Island publication’s study found that hundreds of homes were undervalued by a total of “tens of millions of dollars” during the process, including some that were “appraised only for their land value.” County Assessor David Moog told the outlet the errors arose due to a staffing deficit and that some of them will be corrected. Property owners have until April 2020 to file a grievance with their property assessment. Despite the 417 errors, Newsday found that the overall assessment was relatively accurate, with 400,000 residential properties being valued in total at $252.6 billion. [Newsday]
