Prologis proposes converting San Jose industrial site into EV hub

Amazon was previously floated as possible tenant in redevelopment plan

San Jose Site Proposed for Conversion to EV Delivery Hub

A San Jose industrial site once linked to Amazon could be transformed into an electric vehicle prep and delivery hub.

San Francisco-based logistics giant Prologis has submitted a proposal to San Jose city officials to repurpose an existing industrial building at 2256 Junction Avenue into an EV distribution center, The Mercury News reported.

Duke Realty owned the one-story, 107,700-square-foot structure until Prologis acquired the Indianapolis-based firm in 2022 for about $26 billion, according to The Registry

If the city greenlights the application, Prologis will upgrade the ancillary office space, site power, lighting, paving and roof, Prologis’ Janet Galves told The Mercury News in a statement.

The industrial site would need to be able to conduct repairs, like software updates and replacing tires and other parts, the outlet said. Prologis might also need to build a showroom.

Because customers would need to be able to access the site to pick up cars or take them in for repairs, the use change would also require more parking onsite. Prologis could put about 920 spaces on the property, planning documents show.

Prior to Prologis’ EV delivery center plans, it floated leasing the space to Amazon to use as a logistics hub. In April, Prologis received final approval to demolish the existing building and replace it with a larger warehouse and industrial hub. The latest proposal instead seeks to revamp what’s already there.

Prologis has been making moves elsewhere in the Bay Area in the past month. In June, the real estate investment trust snapped up a 177,000-square-foot industrial site in Fremont for $59 million. It’s also looking to build a 7 million-square-foot mixed-use complex around San Francisco’s Caltrain station in Mission Bay. Its S.F. Gateway project, which would bring 2 million square feet of industrial space to a 17-acre site in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood, is under review by city planners. Officials will consider the future of the development at a hearing on Sept. 11.
