Two San Francisco penthouses owned by the late George and Charlotte Shultz are being listed on Russian Hill for a combined $29 million.

The properties on the top floor of an Eichler-developed tower at 999 Green St. include two listings – a north penthouse, which served as the couple’s main residence; and a south penthouse, which they used for entertaining, the San Francisco Business Times reported.

George Shultz, a renowned business executive and one-time U.S. secretary of state, died in February 2021. Charlotte Mailliard Shultz, a former protocol chief for the City of San Francisco and the State of California, died in December. Both lived at the penthouses after they were married in 1997, a ceremony followed by a $4-million reception.

The 5,400-square-foot north penthouse is listed for $17 million. The three-bedroom residence has a large skylight, two wood-burning fireplaces, two wet bars and a wood-paneled study.

The 5,000-square-foot south penthouse is listed for $12 million. The three-bedroom residence has a wraparound outdoor terrace with views from the Bay Bridge to the Golden Gate Bridge.

Both towers are on the 32nd floor, accessed by a private foyer with silk fabric wallpaper and double doors. Both penthouses share many design features, including floor-to-ceiling glass walls, dramatic staircases and in-unit elevators to access each tower’s second floor.

Karen Mendelsohn Gould and Max Armour of Compass are the listing agents. The units can be bought together, or separately.

Charlotte Shultz bought the north penthouse for $3.3 million in 1989 with her then-husband, the late real estate developer Melvin Swig. After she and George were married, they bought the south penthouse for about $5 million.

The couple’s high-profile guests included Dianne Feinstein, Henry Kissinger, Tony Blair and Tony Bennett.

George Shultz held cabinet positions under both Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. In addition to being a one-time president of Bechtel Corp. and a fellow at the Hoover Institution, he was also a director of the infamous Theranos Inc.

The penthouse sale marks the third time the combined properties will be on the market, Gould told the San Francisco Chronicle. The first buyers of the apartments, built in 1964 and converted to condominiums in 1974, were San Francisco philanthropist Alfred Wilsey and his former wife, the author Pat Montandon.

Luxury homes have come to market this spring, including an Italianate Victorian in Sea Cliff once owned by actress Sharon Stone listing for $39 million.

A Russian Hill home owned by Giants minority co-owner and Sterling Bank and Trust founder Scott Seligman closed last month for $9.8 million.
