Good Samaritan aims to triple its footprint in San Jose

Hospital wants to expand to 1.4M sf in phased construction plan

The 474-bed Good Samaritan Hospital wants to triple the size of its southwest San Jose campus without adding a single bed.

The hospital has filed preliminary plans to increase its footprint from 450,700 square feet to 1.37 million square feet at 2425 and 2333 Samaritan Drive, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

Plans call for a new and taller hospital wing, a medical office building and two new parking garages. The expansion could replace a parking lot east of the hospital.

The new development and a seismic makeover of its 450,700-square-foot main hospital building would take place within its 19.9-acre campus near the juncture of state highways 17 and 85.

The acute care provider, owned by Tennessee-based HCA Healthcare, would operate the 57-year-old hospital during its renovation and 900,000-square-foot expansion, without downtime of critical services.
Good Sam says it needs to greatly expand its size and scope in order to keep pace with health care trends.

These include changes in operational and patient care models, increases in average patient acuity and disease prevalence, increased use of private patient rooms, the dramatic evolution and impact of technology and modification of regulations and building codes, according to the proposal.

The hospital’s multiple patient rooms now are out of step with patient preference, privacy and infection control, according to the hospital.
“Today, private patient rooms are the norm,” the hospital said in its proposal.

“Currently, Good Samaritan Hospital does not have any private patient rooms.”
The hospital says its operating rooms are also dated, and would be expanded to accommodate more equipment and staff.

“Computers, larger anesthesia carts, perfusion machines, integrated ceiling-mounted monitors, and mobile X-rays are just some of the equipment routinely brought into the operating room,” Good Samaritan said.

Construction at Good Samaritan would be conducted in phases. The first phase would expand the main hospital by 260,000 square feet, bringing the size of the campus to 710,700 square feet by 2029.

The second and final phase adds another 455,000 square feet in new hospital facilities and another 200,000 square feet in a separate medical office building, for an additional 655,000 square feet. The expected completion date was not disclosed.

In the meantime, the owner of the adjacent Samaritan Medical Center filed plans to replace eight medical offices with three new ones, adding 290,000 square feet.

Also developers PMB and Harrison Street Real Estate Capital filed plans in August to build a 200,000-square-foot medical office building four miles away from Good Samaritan.
