Ranking Houston’s top 10 home sales in August

The River Oaks, West University and Memorial neighborhoods dominated the top 10 list of priciest homes sold in Greater Houston in August.

The top deal, however, came in Houston’s Museum District for a $9.95 million home that was once owned by former Texas Governor Mark White and Margaret Wray, the daughter of Texaco founder John Cullinan.

River Oaks had two home sales among August’s top five, one listed at $5.65 million and the other for $5.5 million. The River Oaks mansion at 3920 Inverness Drive, which was initially listed by Nan and Co properties for $18 million and then reduced to $13 million in August is still on the market.

The two other properties rounding out the top five were a $4.5 million West University home and a $4.25 million property in The Woodlands, a suburb 28 miles north of downtown Houston.

Martha Turner Sotheby’s International Realty, Greenwood King Properties and Keller Williams Woodlands each had two listings in the top 10.

The data was collected by the Houston Association of Realtors based on list prices and doesn’t include off-market deals. Here are the top five:

3 Remington Lane, $9.95 million

This Shadyside home, which was built in 1939 and designed by architect John Straub was originally listed for $12.5 million in 2021 after a massive renovation. It was then taken off the market and relisted in June for $10 million

The home, which sits on a 1.36-acre lot, has four bedrooms, three half baths and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was originally designed for Margaret Cullinan Wray, the daughter of Texaco founder Joseph Cullinan, and was previously owned by Robert Clay, a Houston-based industrial and build-to-rent developer and his wife Emily.

The historic home’s most notable feature is a grand reception hall that transitions into a dining room that overlooks the property’s patios, gardens and a lawn-dropped pool. Martha Turner Sotheby’s Hedley Karpas had the listing.

The second most expensive home on the list is a five-bedroom River Oaks mansion that sits on a 16,200-square-foot lot near the St. John’s School, Houston’s most exclusive private school.

The home’s notable features include a library/study, three masonry fireplaces, wrap-around veranda, summer kitchen, gameroom and homework loft. Greenwood King Properties’ Cathy Blum had the listing.

This seven-bedroom, seven-bathroom Georgian mansion in River Oaks has a two-story foyer, a library and media and gamerooms, a workshop and a putting green with an outdoor grill and bar, as well as an elevator to all three floors. The home’s second floor includes a primary bedroom with an outdoor balcony and an adjacent exercise room. The third floor is an apartment with a kitchenette.There’s also 1,000 square feet of space for a future build-out. Martha Turner Sotheby’s Martha Adger had the listing.

This new-construction home in West University has six-bedrooms, six bathrooms and sits blocks away from Rice Village, one of Houston’s oldest shopping areas. The home includes a summer kitchen, outdoor fireplace, a private lawn with a gazebo and a Smart Home electrical system wired with a generator and electric car charger.
