Amazon is growing in the Domain in a big way. 

The tech giant plans a $60.5 million buildout of its digs at Cousins Properties-owned Domain 9, at 2904 Palm Way, according to a filing with a state licensing department. Work at the 18-story, building is scheduled to begin in December.

Amazon leased the entire 340,000-square-foot building in 2021. At the time, it planned to start moving into the building in early 2024, but the new filing says work is expected to wrap up next August. 

San Francisco-based WRNS Studio is listed as the renovation’s design architect. It has worked with other tech companies like AirBnb and Adobe. The building was designed by HKS and looks like a glass cubist sculpture. It is formed by a series of textured glass squares jutting out from one another into a sleek rectangle.

The news of the buildout comes just a few weeks after another tech giant shifted some of its Austin workforce out of the Domain. Indeed, a job search platform, announced it would move out of one of its two buildings in the north Austin neighborhood for more space in its downtown tower at 200 West 6th Street.

IBM recently leased 320,000 square feet from Hines at a to-be-built office in the Domain. The neighborhood has drawn activity from the tech set, one of Austin’s top employment sectors, even as offices across the city have hollowed out following work-from-home policies and widespread job cuts in the industry. 

In July, the city neared 20 percent office vacancy, a record since at least 2009.
