East Hampton Village is the first East End municipality to adopt a permanent sidewalk and outdoor dining policy, according to the Southampton Press.

Under the new code in East Hampton, standalone restaurants and those attached to inns can move as much of their seating capacity outdoors as they want between April 15 and Nov. 15, including to public sidewalks.

Many municipalities across the country allowed restaurants to construct temporary sidewalk or curbside dining areas last year, in an effort to help eateries that were forced to close their dining rooms to mitigate the spread of Covid-19.

That move has proven to be quite popular. East Hampton Village isn’t the first New York municipality to adopt a permanent policy. Last September, New York City made its Open Restaurants program permanent.
