Revamped Mettawa Mansion Listed for $9M

Shagbark, a recently renovated Mettawa mansion, just listed for a smidge under $9 million.

The asking price is the second highest in Lake County, according to Crain’s. The mansion spans 11,000 square feet, while the property extends out to 11 acres. The sprawling manor sits at 25185 Shagbark Road, down the street from a Costco and the Tri-State Tollway.

A Redfin listing pegs the number of bedrooms at six to go along with eight full bathrooms and three half bathrooms. The asking price for the 1938-build manse is $5,000 under $9 million. The grounds in the parcel are divided into 3.5 acres of irrigated grounds and 7.5 acres of tax incentivized native prairie. The price per square foot equates to about $815.

Amenities in or on the property include a 600-gallon salt water aquarium, half basketball court, “resort-style” pool, a cigar room and the home comes fully furnished. Designer furniture from names like Holly Hunt, Dorya, Baccarat and Ralph Lauren Home dots the interior. The driveway spans a half mile, giving a prospective buyer a measure of privacy.

The renovation of the home by the owners is substantial. They transformed a library into a combination kitchen and social space, complete with couches. An outdoor potting shed was made into the cigar room, and an old kennel area was crafted into a gym, greenhouse and pen that houses ducks and chickens, according to the outlet. The owners declined to comment on the total renovation costs.

The Redfin listing states that one of the biggest benefits of living in Mettawa is the financial structure. The village operates similarly to a private holding company, according to the listing. It collects sales tax revenue then pays an annual cash divided to residents by way of a real estate tax rebate. The listing claims that the Shagbark estate had $12,000 rebated in 2025.
