San Jose may be getting a 396-home development that includes retail and a senior care center.
Bay Area developer SummerHill Apartment Communities proposed the mixed-use development for a site at 1097 Leigh Avenue and 1792 Southwest Expressway, the Mercury News reported. The 4.4-acre site behind Del Mar High School, is home to a CVS drug store, discount clothing store and parking lot.

Plans show 3.2 acres will be for the apartments and retail buildings and the rest will be for the senior care center. A nearby 76 gas station, 7-11 convenience store and May’s hair salon are on an adjacent parcel and won’t be demolished. The site is within walking distance of two light rail stations.

Plans show 20,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space as well as a seven-story residential building atop a 514-space parking garage. The residential portion will include a pool deck and several courtyards, as well as amenities such as a fitness room, club room, roof decks and a work-from-home center.

About seven miles north, at 1590 Berryessa Road, the 63-acre site of San Jose’s main flea market is on the market for about $300 million. It has environmental and zoning approvals for more than 3,400 new homes and 3 million square feet of offices. That property and the 57 acres immediately north of it make up the site of Market Park San Jose, a $3 billion project consisting of a retail center, single-family homes, condos and apartments, public parks and offices.
